Smooth Transition for a Preschooler:

This is the time to enter into the new academic session. Following are the few points suggested to smooth transition of a child from home to his/her school.

The young children get confused and disoriented about his mother and teacher. He continuously fluctuates between going towards her mother and moving away from her. Secure attachment occurs in the majority of Parent-child relationship and it is regarded as the best basis for a child to cope with the temporary separation from his parent.  To give your child a secure transition, following points can be helpful.

  1. Talk positively about the teacher and school.
  2. Prepare him for kindergarten by talking to him about it prior to leaving him there.
  3. Do not slip away when he is not looking.
  4. Say goodbye, give a hug and tell your child that you will be back to pick him up.  Don’t forget to tell him to have fun.
  5. Do not panic if he starts crying, have faith and trust in your child and remember it is just a phase, he is going through; but remember not to avoid any serious issue like hurting and abuse in the school.
  6. He needs your support and understanding, so please be calm at that time instead of crying along with him.
  7. Sometimes it is helpful if you tell your child at home, what you will be doing while he is in kindergarten .
  8. Never threaten your child that you will not come to pick him up.
  9. Make settling easy for him by coming to pick him up on time.
